After hanging up, Asa stared down toward the river again. He wondered if Jeff was around. An old cowboy appeared at the other end of the porch. “As it happens, I am.”

“Am I going insane that I see you?” Asa might have expected an early death, but had not expected to lose his connection with reality.

“You are just becoming aware, as you were when you felt the air move in your parlor and then the pot seem to fall but not be broken.”

“That was you?”

Jeff shook his head. “Nope. You got a ghost, son.” He gestured toward the house.

“I do or the ranch does?”

“I ‘spect she’s attached to you.”

“Great.” Another problem. “What do you know about her?”

“That’s for you to find out.”

Asa ground his teeth and lit another cigarette.

“Them things’ll kill you,” Jeff drawled.

“I never expected to live long and might as well enjoy it while I am here.”

“Might lessen that enjoyment.”

“You know about that, or just envious I can smoke and you can’t?” He blew out the smoke.

“Maybe both.”

“Since you know about the ghost, tell me more about what’s down by the river.”

“You load them silver bullets into your gun?”

“I did.”

“Then one day, you’ll have to kill it or drive it off. Can’t let it stay here.”

“Is it a danger to my son?”

“Can’t say but keep him from the river.”

“It’s getting to be harder to keep him where I want him.”

Jeff chuckled. “Not gonna get easier either.”

“I get it. In terms of danger, what about Devi.”

Jeff chuckled. “She can take care of herself.”

Asa smoked and considered that. “Am I doing wrong by marrying her?”

“If you thought so, why’d you decide to do it?”

“I don’t know.”

“I think you do but just don’t want to face it.” He chuckled and vanished.

“Lot of use you are,” Asa said as he ground out the cigarette with his boots. Maybe he did know.
